The goal when framing a piece of art is to have the frame complement and not overpower the artwork. I love when a piece is completed and the art and the frame feel like one thing, like they were meant to be together. Here is a little watercolor we framed in a simple Bella frame that was the color of the lavender building and had the pattern of the windows … a perfect match!

The smallest detail can make a big impact. We framed this beautiful little painting of a rose by William Hubacek, a still-life and landscape painter based in San Francisco and San Bruno in the early 1900’s. The soft white gold finish with the red clay coming through and the delicate flower detail in the corners perfectly complement the painting. The frame was made by Rhonda Feinman.

There are no rules when it comes to having fun with picture framing design … your imagination is your only limitation. We framed this Calder lithograph with a traditional gold gilded frame, made by Rhonda Feinman, and fabric mat and then added a fun little twist, the striped Italian lacquer fillet. The red stripes add some whimsy to the piece that is charming and unexpected!

There is a good amount of waste in custom picture framing. We try to recycle and donate as much as possible and still sometimes I feel like I can do better. A couple of years ago I started cleaning out my warehouse and cutting any usable moulding down into standard sizes and selling the frames for between $5 and $25 on average. It is a great way to minimize waste. Here is a painting that we framed using one of those warehouse scrap frames. It complements the art beautifully and you can save money by not doing everything totally custom!

Hand-made, hand-leafed gold frames allow more options in the finish than premade moulding. There are different color choices for the clay coat under the gold leaf, red, black, blue and green. This ribbed frame has a blue clay base that makes the gold take on more of a cooler tone. The frames can also be burnished to different degrees to show more or less of the clay coat.
This Miro lithograph has been framed in a more traditional presentation, with fabric mats and a gold-leaf frame made by Rhonda Feinman. Optium acrylic is always the best choice to protect all pieces we treasure.

Welded steel can be a great material for framing. Here we used the rusted copper color, made by Bridger Metal Works, on this article about a vintage muscle car and it complements the car perfectly. Paired with the gray fabric mat, they make a beautiful combination.

Wonderful little watercolor portrait framed in a custom hardwood frame made by Woodworks Imagery. It has a panel of solid walnut on the inside and maple raised border along the edges. As a fun detail, we had the corner splines made in maple that was stained green to bring out a little touch of color from the watercolor. It’s these thoughtful little details that make a truly special framing presentation.

Fun Campbell’s Soup label with an authenticated Andy Warhol signature, a great example of the Pop Art movement. We have floated it on a gold mat and framed it in a rustic red welded steel frame made by Bridger Metal. I often like framing in the materials that are suggested by the art, like the metal for the soup can. This makes the art and the framing feel like one complete, cohesive thing.

We don’t tend to wear silk scarves out here on the West Coast, so what to do with those beautiful Hermes scarves … frame them to create a beautiful piece of art for your walls. When you frame a scarf it allows you to really appreciate the fun patterns and themes printed on them. We gently sew them just along the edges so if you ever wanted to take them out you can. They always keep their natural ripple so you can tell that it is a silk textile.

Wonderful Rembrandt etching! Here a client brought in a small Rembrandt etching and was originally interested in a more traditional gold gilded frame, however, we ended up with a more clean and contemporary design. We hand-wrapped a museum 8-ply mat with a subtly textured, neutral linen for a soft, but more dramatic look. Then we framed the etching with a solid ash moulding stained in city gray and made by Picture Woods. We used all museum quality products including Optium acrylic and voila!
