There is a good amount of waste in custom picture framing. We try to recycle and donate as much as possible and still sometimes I feel like I can do better. A couple of years ago I started cleaning out my warehouse and cutting any usable moulding down into standard sizes and selling the frames for between $5 and $25 on average. It is a great way to minimize waste. Here is a painting that we framed using one of those warehouse scrap frames. Here a client brought in a small Rembrandt etching and was originally interested in a more traditional gold gilded frame, however, we ended up with a more clean and contemporary design. We hand-wrapped a museum 8-ply mat with a subtly textured, neutral linen for a soft, but more dramatic look. Then we framed the etching with a solid ash moulding stained in city gray and made by Picture Woods.
